Fisher of men game

Simon had been fishing all night and had not caught any fish but he listened to Jesus anyway and put the net into the water. When Simon did this the net became so full of fish that the net began to break. He had to call a friend to help bring in the nets and the fish. Simon was amazed by all the fish they had caught and was embarrassed because he knew that he was a sinful man. But Jesus told the Simon and the other men that they would become fishers of men. When Simon and the other men heard this they parked their boats and left everything they had a followed Jesus.

Use the following questions to help the children understand the story. Jesus decided to use ordinary men like Simon to tell people about himself.

The men could not catch any fish until Jesus helped them. Catching Fish Craft: Give each child a piece of blue construction paper. Have small pieces of string and glue available for the kids to create a net on the paper.

This can be done by gluing the string across the paper. When they are finished gluing the string onto the paper, have the kids fill their net with fish stickers.

They will have created their own net full of fish to help them remember the story. Bookmarks: Give each child a blank bookmark I think that index cards work just fine for this.

Have the children copy the Bible verse onto the bookmark and decorate it using whatever materials are available. Encourage them to put the bookmark somewhere that they will see it often and be reminded that God can use them to amazing things.

Ask them to do it. As they try, point out that they are getting tired and discouraged just like the fishermen. Point out that they might stop after failing. Speak about a time you were frustrated and wanted to give up. Ask them if they would want to try again because a stranger told them to do so.

Point out that even though Peter was tired and thought he knew better, he chose to trust Jesus. Talk about how we should always trust Jesus, no matter how we may feel. Explain that follow means to go after someone and do as they do.

Play a game of follow the leader. Before the game begins, select a chore your child does not enjoy. Hide a small toy or surprise e. Have the child copy your example in completing the task while leading them closer to the surprise. Point out that they would not have gotten the surprise if they had not followed the leader and done the task they disliked. Explain that you knew better and they had to trust you, follow your example, and complete the task. In the same way, we must trust Jesus, follow Him, and do as He commands.

Talk to your child about good news. You may use the surprise they just received as an example or select something else about which your child is excited. Think about how people always want to share good news with others. You may even think about ways people do so such as wedding announcements or photos of new babies. Ask the child if they would like to keep something exciting a secret, and if it would be hard to do so.

How hard was it to find all of the items on the list? Did you get tired walking up and down the streets and hills looking for all of the items. Did you find every single item on the list? Jesus wants us to keep going, never stop trying to tell others the good news. What if the items you were trying to find and bring back to the church were people? Thank for you the people who taught us about Jesus. Use us to share His love with others.

Divide the room into girls and boys. Have the boys read it aloud, and then have the girls read it aloud. Who can read the loudest? Give all the kids a Bible. Then after you read the verse, give them the reference and see who can find it first in their Bible. Kurt enters, carrying the penguin.

Peter enters from the other side of the stage. KURT: Penguins dive deep under the water to catch their fish. That would be gross. Nothing catches people faster than the love of Jesus.

KURT: Jesus? Have any of you ever been fishing? Fishing is a fun, quiet, and relaxing hobby. You need a pole, a line, and one thing more.
